About

Color Index is a professional color analysis and palette generation tool built for designers, illustrators, art directors, photographers, and anyone who works seriously with color. Its core mission is to bridge the gap between seeing a color and knowing it — giving users not just hex codes, but the full cultural, historical, and professional identity of every color they encounter.

The core value loop: upload an image → extract every significant color → receive accurate color names with historical context, cultural references, and professional usage notes → save and share a living palette.

Color Extraction uses AI to identify and name every dominant color in an uploaded image, mapping each to its closest historic name (e.g. Prussian Blue, Venetian Red, Bone) alongside industry-standard professional designations. Colors can also be extracted directly from any website URL.

Palette Generation spans multiple modes: Era-Based (Art Deco, Bauhaus, Mid-Century, etc.), Regional (geographic regions and cultural traditions), Brand-Based (brand archetypes), and Mood-Based (emotional or atmospheric prompts).

Professional tools include an Accessibility Checker for WCAG contrast ratio analysis, a Color Blindness Simulator visualizing palettes across 8 types of color vision deficiency, and a Color Harmony Tool for complementary, triadic, analogous, and split-complementary harmonies.

Export options cover the full creative suite: PDF, ASE (Adobe), SVG, and JSON. A Community Gallery lets users publish palettes, browse collections, and discover inspiration.

Most color tools give a hex code and a generic name. Color Index gives provenance — where a color comes from, what it was called, who used it, and why it matters.
